Broward County Animal Care and Adoption to Close Pompano Beach Satellite Location

The Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division will close its small satellite animal shelter located in Pompano Beach effective Sunday, August 4, in an effort to focus resources at the main Animal Care and Adoption Center in Fort Lauderdale.

“Consistent with the plan to centralize shelter operations when construction of the new animal adoption center is completed in 2015, we are taking measures now to consolidate operations at the Fort Lauderdale facility, ” said Susan Pierce, director, Animal Care and Adoption Division.

For the past several weeks, County animal care staff has been transporting lost pets and strays from the north part of the County directly to the Fort Lauderdale Adoption Center. “We are currently working with city animal control officers and rescue groups that rely on the shelter in Pompano for lost and stray animal drop-off to utilize the Adoption Center in Fort Lauderdale. Our desire is to begin operating one shelter so we can reorient staff to growing and implementing programs that have proven to reduce intake and increase the successful adoption of pets, ” said Pierce.

After August 4, the public will be asked to bypass the Pompano shelter and go to the Adoption Center in Fort Lauderdale, to look for a lost pet, surrender an animal, or adopt a dog or cat. The Adoption Center in Fort Lauderdale is located at located at 1870 S.W. 39 Street, on Perimeter Road at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and is easily accessible by exiting I-95 at Griffin Road.

“Coupled with lifesaving rescue efforts and an enhanced foster program, the fact that we have a higher volume of visitors at the Fort Lauderdale Adoption Center, the cats and dogs housed at the larger facility will receive far more opportunities to be successfully reunited or adopted, ” said Lisa Mendheim, public education coordinator for the Animal Care and Adoption Division. “It also allows more frequent attention from our veterinary staff and daily interaction with the growing number of active volunteers.”

Although the Pompano building will be closed, the site will continue to be the designated location for mobile animal clinics providing spay/neuter services through the partnership with the County to offer low-cost sterilization surgeries. Other public/private partnerships at this location will be considered as Animal Care continues its mission to reduce the number of homeless pets throughout Broward County.

The Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division is dedicated to providing shelter for lost and homeless pets.
