When the county was first created, it covered a much larger amount of land. It stretched from the Suwanee River on the west all the way to the Atlantic Ocean on the east. The northern line was found at the mouth of the Suwannee River.
Many other counties were formed out of Duval County including Nassau County, Alachua County, Clay County and parts of St. Johns County.
The county includes five communities, which are:

- • Baldwin
Jacksonville makes up the bulk of the population and the three beach communities are often lumped together and called “The Beaches”.
